HEART DISEASE IN WOMEN

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for American women, more so than breast, cervical, and ovarian cancer combined. 64% of women who have a heart attack or stroke show no previous symptoms this event. So it is important to be educated.

The cause of heart disease is the build up of plaque among the blood vessels. It is really hard to detect this plaque with the naked eye. However, there has recently been an advancement in heart detection. The creator of South Beach Diet, Dr. Arthur Agatston used refined computer tomography scans to measure the build up of plaque. Dr. Agatston was able to differentiate between hard plaque and soft plaque using this new development. Hard plaque is where ruptured arteries have healed over and soft plaque is a source of potential new ruptures. When it ruptures a heart attack can occur due to lack of blood flow to the heart.

Cardiovascular or aerobic: steady physical activity using large muscle groups. This type of exercise strengthens the heart and lungs and improves the body's ability to use oxygen. Aerobic exercise has the most benefits for your heart. Over time, aerobic exercise can help decrease your heart rate and blood pressure at rest and improve your breathing.
Strengthening: repeated muscle contractions (tightening) until the muscle becomes tired. For people with heart failure, many strengthening exercises are not recommended.
